Puzzling Rosy Sludge on Isolated Tasmanian Coast Prompts Concerns of Possible Phytoplankton Proliferation

Agencies in the island state are working to identify a pink slime that has surfaced on a isolated coast, with some scientists concerned it could be an algal bloom.

Widespread Presence Across Coastline

The rosy-colored ooze was found on a section of a coastal area about 60 kilometers south of the capital. A similar sludge has also been recorded on sections of Little Roaring Beach and an additional coastal site.

Specimens Collected for Testing

Specimens have been collected and provided to the regulatory body for testing. A representative commented that "algae outbreaks are a natural occurrence in response to changes in food sources, warmth, precipitation or illumination".

"These blooms are sometimes called crimson or rosy tides because the outbreaks can turn the water reddish," the spokesperson noted. "Only some algal blooms are harmful, with numerous types functioning as a primary source of food for animals in the marine food web."

"The most common cause of crimson tides in Tasmanian waters is the marine phytoplankton Noctiluca scintillans, which can create glowing light shows at night."

Increasing Rate Associated with Climate Change

Phytoplankton proliferations are natural events but their rate has risen in recent times, in part due to global warming and environmental waste that join together to create mineral-filled seas primed for the rapid spread of dinoflagellates.

Dinoflagellates are a marine plant that typically act as the ocean's detritus consumers. During a proliferation, there is a rapid growth in their numbers that disturbs the proper operation of ecosystems.

These phenomena have been equated with marine infernos and can continue to grow as long as circumstances are favorable. In more extreme scenarios, delicate ocean habitats can be devastated as aquatic animals is destroyed or suffocated, providing more nutrients for the proliferation.

Previous Devastating Event in a neighboring state

South Australia in the past confronted a catastrophic algae outbreak along its southern shore after a string of sea temperature spikes, which expanded across a vast area. The event left swimmers with sore eyes and hacking coughs and may have eliminated up to numerous aquatic species across 400 different species, according to government calculations.

Specialist Assessment on the Tasmanian Event

A marine expert, who was involved in studying the onset of the previous algal bloom commented, based on images of the current situation, the likely culprit involved was Noctiluca scintillans, a type of dinoflagellate also known as "marine shimmer".

"There have been numerous of these blooms around the island of late," she added.

The expert said this organism did not produce toxins like the organism involved in that devastating algal bloom, but it does consume tiny creatures and "lots of fish eggs", meaning marine life were in greatest danger.

"Typically one notices a bloom of the organism after a outbreak of something else, or for example a fish reproduction," she noted.

Appeals for Investigation and Community Health

Lilly Henley, who gathered specimens of the rosy slime in the state, said it seemed the possible outbreak had "grown significantly" and suggested the salmon farming industry was the probable cause, referring to like situations in other places.

"Thus the state needs to send a firm alert here, the government and the environmental agency need to act to this. We need to analyse the examples we've collected and we need to put word out the people here," she said.

She stated she had worries for community health after experiencing a numbness along her arms and face while being splashed with contaminated seawater.

Accounts of Deceased Animals and Calls for Leadership Intervention

An environmental foundation has stated lifeless animals and deceased marine life washing ashore, with a prominent conservationist describing the situation as an "natural disaster" and calling on the government head to see and "take control the response that authorities must be making".

"The leader needs to realize this is a catastrophe in the happening, financially as well as for nature."

Addressing journalists, the leader said he was uninformed of any links between the algae outbreak and the salmon industry, stating laboratory analysis was needed before judgments could be drawn.

"The 1,200 beaches across the state are our resources and we need to ensure the public and our industry can operate side-by-side to use our waterways efficiently and responsibly."
